Heidi' s e-mail to her friend Jonathan!

Hi  Jonathan!

My  name' s  Heidi  and  I come  from  a  small   village  in  the  mountains  in  Switzerland. I' m 12  years  old  and  I  live  with  my mum  and  dad and  my  two  brothers  in  a  big  old  chalet outside my  village, Verzine.
Let  me  tell  you   a  little about  my  everyday  life  and  my  country.
Every  day,  I  go  to  school in Verzine  and  I have  a  lot of  friends. In spring, I walk  down  the  mountain. It' s wonderful  then. There  are lots  of  flowers and cows  and sheep. In  winter, I ski or take  my sleight! It' s great! I love skiing. It' s my favourite  hobby. The Summer is  beautiful too. Then, I often  walk in the  mountains around  my  home. The  scenery  is fantastic with  all  the  beautiful flowers  and  the little wild  animals  around!

Ένα διαφορετικό ΣΗΜΑΝΤΙΚΟ μάθημα διδασκαλίας!

Ένας καθηγητής μπαίνει στην τάξη και δίνει στους μαθητές του ένα μάθημα ζωής που δεν θα ξεχάσουν ποτέ. Ένας καθηγητής φιλοσοφίας, την ώρα του μαθήματος, άνοιξε το συρτάρι στο γραφείο του, πήρε κάποια αντικείμενα που βρίσκονταν στο εσωτερικό του και τα τοποθέτησε πάνω στο γραφείο. 

Ένα από αυτά τα αντικείμενα ήταν ένα άδειο βάζο. Στη συνέχεια πήρε μερικά μπαλάκια του γκολφ και τα έβαλε μέσα στο βάζο μέχρι που το γέμισε εντελώς. Κοίταξε τα παιδιά στην τάξη του και τους ρώτησε αν συμφωνούν ότι το βάζο είναι εντελώς γεμάτο. 

Όλοι οι μαθητές συμφώνησαν. Ναι, το βάζο ήταν πράγματι γεμάτο. Ο καθηγητής στη συνέχεια πήρε ένα κουτί με μικρά βότσαλα και τα έριξε στο βάζο, ανάμεσα από τις μπάλες του γκολφ μέχρι να μην υπάρχουν πλέον κενά σημεία. Γύρισε προς τους μαθητές του και τους έκανε την ίδια ερώτηση. Είναι το βάζο γεμάτο; Η απάντηση τους ήταν η γνωστή. Ναι, τώρα το βάζο είναι τελείως γεμάτο.

He's quite old, with white hair andbrown eyes, and he's tall and thin. He's full of energy and very enthusiastic about his subjects. He even jumps up and down when he is teaching, so we never get bored.

Welove Mr Smith because he's friendly and very funny. We also like him because he's patient, and we learn a lot in his lessons.
I think that Mr Smith is the best teacher I have ever had.

ΓΙΑΤΙ ΠΡΕΠΕΙ ΝΑ ΜΑΘΕΙΣ ΑΓΓΛΙΚΑ;

Η Αγγλική γλώσσα, είναι η πιο σημαντική σε ολόκληρο τον πλανήτη, παρόλο που δεν είναι η πρώτη σε αριθμό ατόμων που την έχουν ως μητρική γλώσσα. Πόσοι όμως γνωρίζουν γιατί πρέπει να μάθουν Αγγλικά; Αναφέρω τους πιο σημαντικούς λόγους για να ξεκινήσει κάποιος την εκμάθηση των Αγγλικών και ελπίζω να αποτελέσουν ισχυρό κίνητρο ώστε να κάνεις το πρώτο βήμα. 

- Είναι η επίσημη γλώσσα σε 53 χώρες. 

- Περίπου 400 εκατομμύρια άνθρωποι σε ολόκληρο τον πλανήτη έχουν ως μητρική τους γλώσσα τα αγγλικά

- 505 εκατομμύρια την χρησιμοποιούν ως δεύτερη γλώσσα.

- Είναι η επίσημη γλώσσα όλων των μεγάλων και σημαντικών οργανισμών του πλανήτη όπως ο ΟΗΕ, ΟΠΕΚ, ΕΕ, ΝΑΤΟ κ.τ.λ

- Είναι η γλώσσα της επιστήμης, των υπολογιστών, της διπλωματίας και του τουρισμού. 

- Είναι η γλώσσα των μέσων μαζικής επικοινωνίας. Γνωρίζοντας Αγγλικά δεν χρειάζεται να βασίζεσαι σε μεταφράσεις και υπότιτλους για να απολαύσεις τα αγαπημένα σου βιβλία, ταινίες, τραγούδια και τηλεοπτικές εκπομπές.

- Είναι η γλώσσα του internet. Τα περισσότερα websites είναι γραμμένα στα αγγλικά. Γνωρίζοντας αγγλικά θα έχεις τη δυνατότητα να συμμετέχεις σε forum και συζητήσεις.

- Τα Αγγλικά βασίζονται σε απλό αλφάβητο και συνεπώς η εκμάθησή της είναι πιο εύκολη και γρήγορη από τις άλλες γλώσσες.

THE ENVIRONMENT (1)

Nature often takes revenge for the damage it suffers.

As I see it, this statement is accurate. If we look upon nature’s revenge as natural catastrophes, such as floods and fires, then we can certainly say that we are responsible for causing many of them.

As an example, we cut down trees without any control. This can cause landslides and severe flooding, killing thousands  of people and leaving others homeless, it also leads to desertification in parts of the world, destroying wild life and animals’ natural habitats. We pollute the atmosphere, which in turn changes our climate, causing hurricanes, famine, forest fires and much more. We pollute our rivers, which means fewer fish and unsuitable water to drink.

In short, nature certainly does take revenge for the damage it suffers, and it’s up to us to see that this damage is reduced to a minimum, for our sakes and for the sake of future generations.

How do you think can help our environment on a local level?

I believe that we can do a lot on a  local level to help our environment. It seems to me that  if everyone made an effort, we could make a difference.

First of all, we should look at our houses, and make them “greener”. This we can do by using less energy and less water, for example. Moreover, we should learn to recycle as much as possible, including paper, metal and glass. Not only that, but we should cut down on waste, and not use dozens of plastic bags to do our month’s shopping. We should also make sure that our local woods and forests are respected and that the trees are preserved, and not cut down.

T o sum up, we can make a difference at a local level. If everyone make an effort, we would be getting nearer to solving the bigger problems of our environment.

  

CITY & COUNTRY (1)

Many people, when they retire, move out of the city and into the country. In your opinion, why do you think this is so?

As a general rule, when people grow older , they change. What they needed and wanted as young people is not what they need and want later in life.

When people are younger, the hustle and bustle of the city is exciting, and the wonderful entertainment, shopping and maybe sports facilities are important. There is a greater variety of things to do.

However, older people think different. Peace and quite and a relaxed pace of life become much more important, far from the high crime rate and the pollution of most cities. For them, having lived in the city, it’s nice to be able to get away from it all, breathe fresh air, and mix with easy-going people.

Taking everything into account, that’s why I think so many people move to the country when they are older.
